Before technicians arrive, clear the workspace of any personal items, furniture, or materials that could block access to walls, ceilings, or crawlspaces. Make sure electrical and plumbing work is complete and inspected, since once foam is applied, it seals everything in place. For sea cans or tight areas, additional preparation such as rust removal, priming, or moisture-proofing may be required to ensure adhesion and durability.

Temperature and humidity directly affect how spray foam expands and cures. For most products — including 2LB closed-cell and 1LB or ½LB open-cell foam — the ideal surface temperature is between 15°C and 25°C with moderate humidity. Extremely cold or damp conditions can cause poor adhesion, uneven expansion, or slower curing times. In some cases, heaters or dehumidifiers may be used to create the proper environment before application.

Most professional installers use temporary exhaust fans or ventilation systems to remove fumes and maintain airflow. Depending on the type of foam, curing time typically ranges from 12 to 24 hours. During this period, it’s safest to keep people and pets out of the treated area to allow proper ventilation and off-gassing. Once cleared by your contractor, you can safely return and enjoy improved comfort and energy efficiency

After curing, inspect the area for any gaps or overspray. Your contractor should trim any excess foam and ensure even coverage. For flame-retardant or acoustic spray foam applications, confirm that protective coatings or finishes have been applied as specified.

Spray foam is long-lasting and typically requires little maintenance. However, for outdoor or metal structures such as sea cans, regular inspection for condensation, corrosion, or UV exposure is recommended. Interior applications rarely need attention unless the area is altered or renovated later.
